Saturday thoughts. . .

Saturday…John Wayne Marathon on AMC, helps to pass the time away…Loving this Spring weather, especially the rain..Rain seems to somehow soften the world a bit around the edges. My buddy Todd Carter stopped by, hadn’t seen him for some time..did my heart good.

I found a supplement called Bone Strength, going to try it to help my foot heal faster. Fairly inexpensive, $16 for 240, instructions say to take four a day, so that’s about $8 per month.

“Mycrocrystalline Hydroxyapatite (MCHA) is a natural compound that makes up the crystalline matrix of bone and teeth, and is the substance that gives them their rigidity. MCHA is a source of highly absorbable Calcium and Phosphorus, which are the major mineral components of bone. NOW® Bone Strength™ is a comprehensive bone support product providing 4 g (4,000 mg) of MCHA. It also contains Magnesium and Trace Minerals, as well as Vitamins C, D and K to aid in the synthesis and maintenance of bone tissue.”

Ordered from Amazon…LOVE my Amazon Prime Membership, worth every penny of it each year

Ironman Movie
The next Ironman movie comes out in May 2013, here are some trailers:

Kitchen Tip
When frying, a large part of the time I substitute water for oil and it works just fine. If you do need to use oil, use olive oil it’s better for you..

Tsunami
Ah, the tsunami in Japan several years ago, just keeps on giving…

Will be interesting to see how this scenario with North Korea continues to play out. My stepfather served in Korea and talked about how horrible it was.I wonder if the US has the balls to finish it this time…we’ll have to wait and see.

I love to cook with a pressure cooker….

And now my grandson knows how to use one as well! The pressure cooker used for this recipe is about $30 at Walmart.

Ham N Beans
Beans (no need to pre-soak them)
Celery
Red onion
Carrots
Better than Bullion Ham Base
Ham steaks (cut into bite size chunks)

Dice up some celery and red onion, put all of the onion and half of the celery in the pot. Add one handful of beans per person. Fill the pressure cooker up to the fill line with hot water. Spray the seal with some PAM and seal the pan. Put the metal rocker on the top. Heat the pot until it’s venting vigorously, then turn the heat down so the rocker is barely moving. Start the timer, cook for one hour.

After one hour remove from heat, cool in the sink by running cold water over it until the pressure releases. At this point I like to put this mixture into a large stock pot.Add the carrots, ham and the reserved celery. Add the Better Than Bullion to taste, I like to take some of the liquid from the stock pot, dissolve the BTB in it and pour it back in. Do this gradually, adding small amounts to taste. Medium heat to bring it to a boil then turn to low. In five to ten minutes grind some fresh black pepper in, and Enjoy!! Serve with warm bread or rolls.

Today’s Pressure Cookers are so much safer, you really do need to have one in your kitchen. If you decide to get one and need some advice let me know!

I love Reality TV – Survivor Spoiler Alert

My name is Roger and I am a Reality TV junkie..A lot of it is staged and done at the behest of the producers..and I don’t care..

^Link to last night’s show^

Survivor ROCKED last night. Cochran finally won an Immunity Challenge, no mean feat in and of itself. They had to eat some crazy food. And what a great blindside on Corinne, she didn’t even see it coming. Now is when it really starts to get interesting, as there is no more tribal immunity. We’ll start to see a lot more backstabbing, lying and drama. More of human nature at it’s finest…not…

Waiting for Survivor to end so we can start another season of Big Brother, love that show as well. Cage up a bunch of people, pit them against each other for money and watch the hilarity ensue. Want to have some guilty fun? Go on YouTube and do a search for Big Brother in other countries..Ours is lame by comparison but still great fun to watch. Don’t bother buying the late night package though, it’s not worth the money..at all…Note the scheduling changes in the link, they’re starting the show two weeks earlier and changing the nights that it’s on..more to come on that.

Go some clothes that I ordered in the mail, now I have more than gym shorts and man pants to wear..lol..My jeans won’t fit over the cast..(something else in my life I had taken for granted). Never really bought clothes through the mail before so it was kind of a crap shoot but they fit so it worked out ok.

Pet reminder..it’s Mosquito season and that means your pets need their heartworm vaccine..Please get vaccinated as soon as possible..

So I tried adding some 2% milk to the scrambled eggs tonight, not sure it made much of a difference. Will have to try it with something that has more fat in it, like creme fraiche. On a side note, I used fresh locally homegrown eggs from a friend of mine, MUCH more taste than the eggs you get at the store (one of them the shell was even green) I had ordered in some SPAM, three different flavors, Tabasco, Black Pepper and Jalapeno. I've tried the Tabasco before, also known as Hot and Spicy, very nice but hadn't tried the other two flavors. Seemed to make sense to try the Black Pepper Spam tonight with breakfast. Sliced it and fried it with no oil...Very tasty indeed. Very peppery as expected.

One of my daughters is in New York this week, one of the few places in the US I haven't managed to get to, I am very jealous. She took the $25 train ride into New York, had a Chicago Dog, watched the Hari Krishna's and saw Madam Taussaud's Wax museum. The pictures of the exhibits looked very lifelike. Interesting living vicariously through others.

My other daughter registered my 2000 Mercury Mountaineer, total cost to register was $120 for a year. I know it's only $10 a month, but it still seems pretty expensive to register a 13 year old car to me.

Weather's getting warmer, but remember it's still April in Utah. If you're going to play in the outdoors keep a close eye on the weather, it can change very rapidly. Speaking of change, when was the last time you looked at your spare tire, jack and lug wrench in your car? Checked your oil and antifreeze? Tire pressures ok on all four tires?

Getting a little better moving around on the knee cart, staying away from those crutches, for me they're a death trap. Interestingly enough, now my right leg is bruising around where the top of the cast hits my leg, don't now if that's normal or not. My left foot, toes and ankle are all tender, from being hit by the knee scooter, but it's still better than not getting around at all. Thus ends the first week of a (hopefully) only four week endurance of the cast. And that's only if I don't cut it off before then...

Carpe Diem - Sieze the day

A friend of mine's father passed away today and candidly some of the same things went through my head each time I hear of a loved one's passing. Make every day count, tell those around you how you feel about them, etc etc etc...And then I thought...What does that mean????

Make every day count....Don't just trudge through life, scraping out each day.. Make them count..Make it count at work, make it count at home, make it count to other people. Get someone to smile, make someone's day, it's actually pretty easy to do.

For the longest time in my life I kept my feelings to myself, kept them bottled up inside. I didn't tell people how I felt about them. I held grudges, fueled anger and made excuses for all of it. I haven't always been a good Dad or husband, or person for that matter. But as time passed it all started to become clearer, to make sense...I've set my pride aside and asked for forgiveness, and tried to give some on the way as well. Tried to make better choices, be a better person. Doesn't always work, but I'm getting better at it. So can you...

The storal to the mory - Fix those relationships while you still can, while you (and they) are still around. It has been said that time heals all wounds, not sure about that but time can make them easier to heal, at the very least. You might be surprised, maybe the other side will meet you half way...

TELL people how you feel about them, and do it often. Don't assume that they know. Mean it when you say it, and make sure they know that you do. Say thank you once in a while. These changes in your behavior don't happen overnight, but can begin with a single gesture.

Ok, enough mushy stuff for one day.

Til next time...

Week #2 Broken foot musings

This last week I have experienced a pardigm shift of epic proportions. Everyone is helping me instead of the other way around, and it's actually been quite uncomfortable. I'm not complaining mind you, it could have been much worse with surgery and all kinds of fun stuff. But things a week ago I took for granted, like walking to the bathroom or going to the store have changed dramatically. No weight on the foot for 4-8 weeks...sounds pretty simple doesn't it? It's not. Thankfully someone created a very helpful gadget called the Knee Scooter, you place your affect limb on it and then glide around, pushing with the other foot. Oh this was clearly invented for balance less fools like me. I almost killed myself coming back to the house after the Dr. visit, trying to fall down the stairs with crutches. I've done that before, trust me it's not as fun as it sounds...

Friends and family have been more than gracious, bringing in food, helping to clean the house, clean out the litter box, take out the garbage. Daily Goods has a website that you can order groceries from, and have them delivered the next day (and it's fairly well priced - if you'd like to try them I have coupons). Shopko Pharmacy will mail prescription meds and Amazon can take up the rest of the slack. I put a chair in the kitchen that swivels, so I can sit on it and cook, yet something else I have taken for granted in the past.

Interesting, my toes are green, evidently a remnant of the bruising that takes place when you break a bone like I did, basically turning my right foot under itself. This created a spiral break in the bone, looks great on an X-ray. Only the second time in my life I've ever broken a bone. Last time I broke both my wrists, that was a time I'll tell you. They wanted to cast both arms, I told them absolutely not. There are some things a man needs to do for himself...

And on that note, I bid you adieu until next time.
